Of all the cities in Indonesia, Jepara is the most popular for their furniture industry. Jepara is world famous for producing the best handcrafted wooden carving furniture and has become a cluster industry in wooden carving products for decades. Its one of the few places in Indonesia where you can find and kinds of wooden carving products from furniture to statues. The smooth and artistic design and carvings come from a handful of skilled craftsmen that have exceptional ability in the field.

Jeparas wood carving and furniture products industry has been maintained for centuries. They were first acknowledged as an important port kingdom in the mid-sixteenth century. Then in the 19th century, an Indonesian official offered wood carving products from Jepara as tribute to the Queen Wilhelmina of Holland for her marriage ceremony. It was soon spread from word of mouth about the astonishing pieces of Jepara crafts.

Although Jepara is known as the center of wood carving and furniture, there are other industries that are maintained lively in the city. These industries support the main business and are growing to be a big industry like its predecessor. Handicraft products such as rattan, bamboo, monel or white iron accessories and fabric are some of the supporting industries in Jepara. In fact, there is a known original traditional fabric from Jepara named Tenun Troso.

Every supplier or factory in Jepara has their own product specification. Not all suppliers or factories work on the same kind of furniture style. They each have their own specialty of work. Some suppliers specialize in garden/outdoor furniture while other suppliers may specialize on antique reproduction, classic furniture, modern ethnic, Minimalist, and Handicraft. Teak is the main material used in most of the work. Mahogany and other typical tropical woods are also used in the production.
